Environmental Perception in Animals and its Influence on Welfare

On 15th November 2024, the Malaysian National Animal Welfare Foundation (MNAWF) in collaboration with the Animal Science Faculty of Agriculture, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), hosted a successful Animal World Day 2024 talk for students of the JSH UPM at the Faculty of Agriculture UPM, Serdang, Selangor.

The event, inaugurated by MNAWF Chairman Dato' Dr. Mohd Nordin Bin Mohd Nor, commenced at 9.30 am with a warm welcome and opening remarks. Following this, Dr. Sumita Sugnaseelan, an exco member of MNAWF, provided a concise explanation of the prestigious "MNAWF Academic Excellence Award in Animal Welfare". This award serves as a testament to MNAWF's commitment to recognizing and encouraging excellence in the field of animal welfare.

Compassion: The Last Great Hope

The main event featured a series of insightful talks by prominent figures in the animal welfare field. Dr. Amilan Sivagurunathan, MNAWF Deputy Chairman, delivered a powerful talk titled "Compassion: The Last Great Hope". In his address, Dr. Amilan emphasized the critical role of animal care practitioners as the last line of defense for animal welfare in Malaysia. He implored the students to carry on the mantle of compassion and advocacy for the sake of animals.

Initial Care & Management of Injured Stray Animals and Urban Wildlife

The talk continued with Dr. Reuben Sharma, a Senior Lecturer at the Veterinary Faculty of Medicine, UPM, who presented a practical and informative session titled "Initial Care & Management of Injured Stray Animals and Urban Wildlife". Dr. Reuben provided valuable insights into how to respond effectively when encountering injured wild animals, highlighting the importance of responsible intervention. He categorized the management approach into two distinct categories: docile animals and hostile animals, emphasizing the need for different strategies depending on the animal's behavior.

Environmental Perception in Animals and its Influence on Welfare

Dr. Sumita Sugnaseelan concluded the talks with a fascinating presentation titled "Environmental Perception in Animals and its Influence on Welfare". This session addressed the students' curiosity about how animals perceive the world and how their perceptions have evolved alongside humans. Dr. Sumita's talk provided a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between animals and their environment, highlighting the importance of considering their unique sensory experiences.

The event concluded at 12.00 pm with a lively question-and-answer session, where students engaged with all three speakers, seeking further clarification and insights. The event was a resounding success, fostering a greater understanding of animal welfare and inspiring the next generation of animal advocates.
